At the Vitoria plant in Spain, Iván Caño and Antonio Real explain how one of Mercedes’ oldest factories has evolved into a global benchmark for robotics, quality, and flexibility.
“Every van we build already has a customer’s name behind it,” they say. “No two vehicles are identical.”
That complexity defines Vitoria. Producing the V-Class and Vito models, the plant runs almost entirely on a just-in-time and just-in-sequence system — parts arrive and are assembled in real time, with no stock buffers. To achieve this precision, Mercedes relies on a mix of automation, mobile robots, and expert human coordination.
In the Body Shop, automation reaches nearly 95%, with hundreds of robots performing welding, gluing, and laser cutting.
The Final Assembly, on the other hand, remains human-led due to its high variation of parts and options. Yet even here, collaborative robots and AGVs are transforming the way workers interact with machines.
One key innovation is the MoLog project — a logistics system that uses AGVs to deliver customized trolleys filled with parts for each specific vehicle. The result: safer, cleaner, and more ergonomic workflows that reduce forklift traffic and increase efficiency.
Iván and Antonio highlight that the factory’s real power lies not only in automation but in people’s know-how. Training, adaptability, and collaboration keep Mercedes Vitoria running at top performance.
